Meet the child
In April, two-year-old Mashenka had alarming symptoms - she has started limping, worried, vomiting appeared one morning. The results of the urgent examination sounded like a bolt from the blue: a tumor in the left hemisphere of the brain. Total removal of the tumor was performed urgently in the Belarussian Research Center for Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Immunology, histological examination revealed the malignant nature of the neoplasm.
Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor (ATRO) is an aggressive and rapidly growing tumor in children. The standard complex treatment begins with a maximally safe resection and includes chemotherapy and radiation therapy as part of treatment. Masha is currently undergoing chemotherapy. Given the age of the child, localization and spread of the tumor process proton therapy is needed for futher treatment.
Proton therapy is one of the most modern methods of cancer treatment. The addition of radiation to the entire neuraxis and chemotherapy may increase the disease-free survival. High aiming accuracy of the beam during proton therapy delivers higher targeted doses of radiation directly to affect the tumor minimizing radiation exposure to nearby healthy tissue which is especially important in the treatment of head tumors at children. This makes proton terapy the optimal method of radiation therapy and means the opportunity to make the treatment as sparing as possible for small patients, significantly reduce the risks of side effects and avoid serious consequences and further problems in the development of the child.
The treatment is expensive and currently not carried out in the Republic of Belarus. Doctors of the Dr. Berezin Medical Center, St. Petersburg, Russia, specialize in the treatment of oncological diseases in children and are ready to accept Masha for examination and a course of proton beam therapy.
Dear friends, thank you for your help to save Masha life!
