Dmitriy Alexandrovich Grichanyuk
We are pleased to introduce you to a talented Belarusian surgeon, clinician, who is fluent in all surgical interventions in the maxillofacial area.
Dmitriy Alexandrovich Grichanyuk, Associate Professor of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the BelMAPE, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon of the highest qualification category, member of the American and European Association of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgeons, a Belarusian volunteer surgeon who operates on children with congenital defects of the face around the world. Dmitry Grichanyuk was the first in Belarus who performed the operation on the cultivation of the child's mandible using a special device - the distractor.
Our cooperation with Dmitriy Alexandrovich has begun in 2015, and since then he has been providing surgical care to our children in wards with anomalies of the jaw system. Since 2008, the Chance Foundation has been implementing the Drugs and Medical Equipment Program, through which they provide assistance in purchasing expensive medicines, medical equipment and medical supplies for children in need of medical care, including distractors (compression-distraction devices) for staged surgical treatment of pathology of the jaw and speech processors.
Why did you choose the medical profession and this particular specialization?
I have been engaged in professional activity since 2002, after graduating from the Grodno State Medical University with a degree in general medicine. It is no coincidence that I chose the profession of a doctor since I am the youngest member of the family of doctors dynasty. I was inspired by my father, Grichanyuk Alexander Ivanovich, who headed the dental service of the Grodno region for more than 30 years. And also my older sister, Kiselevskaya Tatiana, who is a highly qualified obstetrician-gynecologist.
I also chose maxillofacial surgery for a reason. As a 3rd-year medical student, I was inspired by the problem of congenital deformities of the face in children and their difficult surgical rehabilitation, which, with the right approach, gave children a new life and returned them to society at the earliest possible age. Since that time, I have been drawn to plastic and reconstructive surgery.
What features are in your work? What is its uniqueness?
The peculiarity of my work is associated with the exquisite workmanship to restore the aesthetics and function of the face in patients with various severe congenital and acquired pathologies, at different ages. After all, I operate children almost from birth. There is nothing more important to parents than the beauty of their child and quality of his/her development. After all, we recognize each other by the face, we communicate using face. And if the function of the maxillofacial area is impaired, a patient cannot develop correctly and efficiently, which affects a social adaptation and quality of life. In addition, birth defects are not only an aesthetic malformation. Such children cannot breathe normally, swallow, chew. Diseases often cause hearing and speech problems, affect a child's psyche. But if earlier people with such pathology become the discard of society, now, after operations and rehabilitation, they shake off this stigma for life.
Where do you get your strength? What inspires you and helps you recover after a working day?
Since six years, I have been an athlete and have been involved in various types of martial arts. Since that time I have raised spirit and self-confidence. It basically allows me to recover quickly between and after the long-running operations, and also write scientific papers and make presentations at international conferences at the world level. My hobby and passion, my escape is my family (wife and three children), that as a doctor relieves fatigue and energizes me the next day.
What is the Chance Foundation for you?
I have been cooperating with the Chance Foundation for many years, and I am very grateful that you exist. After all, my innovative surgeries allow me to deal with extremely severe disfiguring deformities of the face, and require certain consumables and tools that not every family can afford to purchase to perform a free operation to return a child to a new life. Where it happens charitable organizations such as “CHANCE” come to the rescue. Thank you!
